There have been at least two famous women named Constance of Castile

Constance of Castile, 1323-1345

Constance of Penafiel or Constance Princess of Castile (Spanish Constanza) (1323 - November 13 1345) was the daughter of Juan Manuel "El Scritor" de Castile, Duke of Penafiel, and Constanza of Aragon. She was the first wife of Alfonso XI of Castile (March 28 in Valladolid), which was annulled in 1327. She was the second wife of Pedro I of Portugal, marrying on August 24 1339 in Lisbon. They had three children:
  • Luiz (February 27 1340 - March 6 1340)
  • Maria (April 6 1343 - app. 1367)
  • Fernando of Portugal (October 31 1345 - October 29 1383)

Constance of Castile, 1354-1394

Constance of Castile, Queen Constanza, (1354-June 1394), was claimant of the Castilian throne after the death of her father Pedro the Cruel. She married, at Roquefort, near Bordeaux, Guienne, on 21 September 1371, John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster, 3rd son of Edward III of England, as his second wife. This was the way for Gaunt to obtain a kingdom of his own (he had also pursued Scotland), England having already many heirs with higher rights than his. John of Gaunt acted as King Consort, but was unsuccessful in obtaining Castile. Their daughter Catalina was married to the claimant of the Trastamara line, Henry III of Castile, thus uniting these two rival claims.
